The leading edge of Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina on Thursday morning, with 110mph winds bringing life-threatening storm surges and??torrential rain. The monster storm is expected to make a prolonged assault on both North and South Carolina and could drench the homes of around 10 million people. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper warned people to stay on alert and impressed that North Carolina is not getting a break, despite the hurricane dropping from a category 4 to a category 2. ?Please hear my message. We cannot underestimate this storm,? Governor Cooper said. ?Don't relax, don't get complacent. Stay on guard. This is a powerful storm that can kill.? The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on Thursday (13 September) at 11am EDT warned: ?Life-threatening, catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding are likely over portions of the Carolinas and the southern and central Appalachians through early next week, as Florence is expected to slow down as it approaches the coast and moves inland .? The advisory also warned that damaging hurricane-force winds are likely along portions of the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina as soon as this evening. Images released by the NHC showed the eye of the storm approaching the U.S. east coast, while others show potential rainfall and the path the hurricane is expected to take. The center of Florence is predicted to hit North Carolina's southern coast on Friday and move southwest before barreling inland on Saturday. Georgia has now joined both Carolina states, along with Virginia and Maryland in issuing an emergency declaration with meteorologists predict up to 10 trillion gallons of rain could be dumped on the southern states. Currently 10 million residents in North and South Carolina and Virginia are under storm watches or warnings, according to the National Weather Service. 13 Sep 2018 Pictured: Graphics released on Thursday 13 September, 2018, show Hurricane Florence approaching the southern states of the U.S. east coast as North Carolina felt the first bite from the monster storm.
