Take a step back in time to the turn of the century and explore the world's last Blockbuster store. The iconic yellow and blue rental stores once dominated the highstreets with over 9,000 worldwide. But competition from on-demand movie-streaming services like Netflix and Hulu forced Blockbuster to declare bankruptcy in 2010. The company closed all of its corporate-owned stores in 2014. Since then, all the privately owned franchises have slowly gone the way of the dodo, crumbling under the weight of online streaming. However, one last stalwart has defied the odds and now business is booming for this family-owned Blockbuster, nestled in the snowy alpine town of Bend, Oregon. Store manager Sandi Harding said: "I always laugh because people come in and say, 'Oh my gosh, it still looks like a Blockbuster. Of course it does, we are Blockbuster." The Bend store became the last in the world when another Blockbuster in Perth, Australia announced it was closing earlier this month. Sandi added: "It caught me completely out of the blue. We were pretty surprised. We were excited for us and sad for them, of course. It's one of those win-lose situations. Before we became the last one, it definitely was more just loyal local customers. But it has almost re-energized us now that we?re the last one. They treat us like celebrities.? Now the Bend location boasts 4,000 customers with paid memberships and is receiving at least five new applications every day. It has also become a mecca for tourists seeking out nostalgic adventures. 14 Mar 2019 Pictured: Assistant managers Dan Montgomery left, Ryan Martin right.
