Isabel Maxwell leaves a court where her sister Ghislaine pleaded not guilty on Friday to new charges of sex trafficking for her former boyfriend, Jeffrey Epstein. She was accompanied by one of her sister's lawyers but refused to comment. This was the first time Ms Maxwell has appeared in court in person since she was arrested. The British socialite, 59, has been charged with trafficking underage girls for Mr Epstein, a convicted sex criminal. She had previously pleaded not guilty to those charges, and on Friday pleaded not guilty to the additional charges regarding a new alleged victim. She appeared in federal court in Manhattan in a blue shortsleeve jail shirt and white mask, with shoulder-length hair rather than her familiar short cut, and took a seat flanked by her lawyers, including Laura Menninger. There were only a few dozen people allowed into courtroom 24B of the Manhattan federal court due to Covid restrictions.Among them were David Boies and Sigrid McCawley, lawyers who represent the second of four Maxwell accusers. Maxwell was confronted in court by an Epstein victim, a blonde woman called Danielle Bensky who sat in the public gallery. Bensky arrived at the last minute to the hearing and craned her neck to see Maxwell. Speaking outside court afterwards, Bensky said: 'To be honest I was too afraid to come to the Epstien trial so this is a new feeling for me to sit there and accept a lot (of things). I do think it's hard to sit through it (the hearing) and it's painful, but it's good too, it's healing.' She added: 'After not having a trial for Epstein this will provide closure for the victims.' Maxwell, who has been locked in a Brooklyn jail since her arrest, appeared for her arraignment on two sex-trafficking charges that were added to her indictment by federal prosecutors in March. Maxwell had requested that her arraignment take place in person after a remote hearing in a separate civil case she is involved in was brigaded by conspiracy theorists, who overwhelmed the court?s public phone line. She has maintained her innocence since her arrest and is expected to plead not guilty to the additional counts Friday. The two counts ? sex trafficking of a minor and sex trafficking conspiracy ? are for allegedly recruiting an unidentified underage girl in the early 2000s. Maxwell and Epstein allegedly groomed the girl in New York and in Florida, where the multimillionaire had a sprawling Palm Beach mansion. ?Epstein and Maxwell recruited Minor Victim- 4 to engage in sex acts with Epstein at the Palm Beach Residence, after which Epstein and, at times, Maxwell provided Minor Victim- 4 with hundreds of dollars in cash for each encounter,? the indictment states. 23 Apr 2021 Pictured: Maxwell lawyer Jeff Pagliuca.
