This pair of Michael Jordan shoes from 1984 has sold for almost $1.5 million USD at Sotheby?s, setting a record high price for sneakers at auction. The 1984 Nike Air Ships are Jordan?s earliest known regular season game-worn Nikes. According to the auction house, they are the first pair of sneakers / trainers to ever smash the $1 million USD mark at an auction - going for $1.472 million USD, and were acquired by collector Nick Fiorella at a Las Vegas sale today (October 24). The signed sneakers are from Jordan?s fifth NBA game in his rookie season. The red and white sneakers were designed by Bruce Kilgore. ?To present such a groundbreaking and important pair of sneakers at this special auction in Las Vegas further solidifies the strength and broad reach of the sneaker collecting community,? said Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby?s streetwear and modern collectables department. The auction house only began selling sneakers in 2019. The shoes were a precursor to the genesis of the Air Jordan line. The Air Ships were the highest valued sneakers ever offered at auction and are the second most valuable pair of sneakers ever, following Sotheby?s record-breaking sale in April of Kanye West ?Grammy Worn? Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototypes from 2008, which sold for $1.8 million USD - via a private sale. 24 Oct 2021 Pictured: Earliest known Michael Jordan Regular Season Game Worn Nike Air Ships sold for $1.472 million at Sotheby's auction.
