The award is given to Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank (2011-2019) and President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy (2021-2022) for his leadership at the head of the European Central Bank, which allowed to face one of the biggest crises that the European Union has experienced since its creation, implementing a series of forceful and risky measures that managed, in the midst of recession of the European economy, to maintain the strength of the euro and the autonomy of the ECB, as well as saving the single currency allowing Europe to emerge stronger from the crisis.
