Japanese central government and Okinawa Defense Bureau are set to resume a landfill work for a runway off Henoko, Nago, Okinawa Prfecture on June 11, 2019. Japan and the U.S. government agreed to build a new airstrip, where the replacement facility for U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma was decided more than twenty years ago. The referendum on the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to the Henoko, which took place earlier in the year, showed 72 percent opposed to the relocation of a U.S. military base.
