Mauritius oil spill. The island of Mauritius has declared a ?state of environmental emergency' after a grounded vessel began leaking tonnes of oil into the Indian Ocean. Satellite images, which show the dark slick spreading in the nearby waters, are being used to monitor the ongoing spill. The MV Wakashio vessel, reported to be carrying nearly 4000 tonnes of oil, ran aground on a coral reef on Mauritius's southeast coast on 25 July. According to media reports, more than 1000 tonnes of fuel have leaked from the cracked vessel into the ocean ? polluting the nearby coral reefs, as well as the surrounding beaches and lagoons. In this image, captured on 11 August by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, the MV Wakashio, visible in the bottom of the image, is stranded close to Pointe d'Esny, an important wetland area. The oil slick can be seen as a thin, black line surrounded by the bright turquoise colours of the Indian Ocean. Oil is visible near the boat, as well as other locations around the lagoon. In response to the spill, the International Charter Space and Major Disasters was activated on 8 August. The charter is an international collaboration that gives rescue and aid workers rapid access to satellite data in the event of a disaster. A full report that provides a preliminary assessment of the oil spill, using imagery from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, is available here. Copernicus Sentinel-2 is a two-satellite mission to supply the coverage and data delivery needed for Europe's Copernicus programme. The mission's frequent revisits over the same area and high spatial resolution allow changes in water bodies to be closely monitored.Credit: ESA / eyevine

The crew of a Royal Air Force A400M Atlas aircraft from 30 Squadron, RAF Brize Norton, observe the coastline of Dover in order to identify potential migrants coming across the English Channel from France today (10/08/2020). Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, approved the use of a Royal Air Force A400M to support the Home Office and UK Border Force in their operations in the Channel. The aircraft will provide surveillance and intelligence, feeding information directly to the UK Coastguard and Border Force, which will facilitate the quicker interception of boats. The Border Force will then be able to take the appropriate action that best fits the situation, whilst also complying with Maritime law. The deployment of the A400M Atlas, permits surveillance to be carried out with a greater field of vision over a wider area. It therefore represented the most effective use of available resources. This constitutes the MOD's initial offer of support to the Home Office, and further work is being carried out to determine who the MOD can further assist in the Channel. This is the first time that a military aircraft has flown in support of the Border Force, but the Royal Navy has previously offered support, most notably in January 2019. Minor blurring added to this image to remove crew names for personnel security reasons. ? MOD / Crown Copyright / eyevine

Image of a Royal Air Force A400M, seen here flying over the Port of Dover today (10/08/2020). ? Dune fields in Mars' Green Crater. The image, taken on 27 April 2020 and centred at 52.3AS, 351.8AE, shows part of an impact crater located inside the larger Green Crater in the Argyre quadrangle in the southern hemisphere of Mars. The image reveals an almost black dune field on the right, surrounded by red soils that are partially covered with bright white ice. Gullies, also partially covered with ice, are visible in the crater wall in the centre of the image. Scientists are currently investigating the relationship between this seasonal ice and the presence of the gullies. The image was taken just after the spring equinox in the southern hemisphere of Mars, when the southernmost part of the crater (to the right) was almost completely free of ice while the northern part (centre) was still partially covered. The southern crater wall has had a longer exposure to the Sun (like on Earth equator-facing slopes receive more sunlight), so the ice in this area recedes faster.Credit: ESA / eyevine

Leaf-like structures in Antoniadi impact crater. This image, captured on 25 March 2020, shows the bottom of the 400 km in diameter Antoniadi impact crater, which is located in the northern hemisphere of Mars in the Syrtis Major Planum region. The blue colour of the image, centred at 21.0AN, 61.2AE, does not represent the real colour of the crater floor but highlights the diversity of the rock composition inside the impact crater. In the centre of the image are dendritic structures which look like the veins on oak leaves. These structures, evidence of ancient river networks in this region, protrude from the surface, unlike channels, which are usually sunken in the surface. This is because the channels were filled with harder material ? possibly lava ? and over time the softer rocks surrounding these branching channels have been eroded, leaving an inverted imprint of this ancient river system. Sunny weather in London today - Beth Gorman and Abe Sugarman at Beckenham Place Park today. Friday is expected to be one of the hottest days ever in Britain, with forecasters saying there is a chance it could break the record of 38.7C recorded at Cambridge University Botanic Garden on July 25 last year. The Met Office has issued a hot weather alert, warning people not to get "caught out" by the sudden rise in temperatures. It has asked people in the South East to close curtains in rooms facing the sun, drink plenty of fluids, avoid excess alcohol, dress appropriately and ?slow down when it is hotO. ?
