This prototype pair of Kanye West?s first Yeezy shoes are set to go up for sale, with the sneakers / trainers expected to sell for over $1 million USD (?L727,650). The rapper wore the sample of the Nike-made shoes in February 2008 during his performance at the 50th Grammy Awards. The Nike Air Yeezy 1 helped kick off the multi-billion-dollar-valued Yeezy sneaker and clothing brand when they launched the following year. West split from Nike in 2013 in order to partner Yeezy with Adidas. Sotheby?s say that ?the Nike Air Yeezy I and Air Yeezy II are still some of the most coveted sneakers by collectors? and, as a result, West?s prototype pair in question are the most valuable sneakers ever to be sold by the auction house. A spokesperson said: "In an unprecedented and historic offering, Sotheby?s is pleased to present the Kanye West ?Grammy Worn? Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototypes." They will be available for direct purchase via 'private sale'. Interested parties are invited to submit offers directly to Sotheby?s for consideration. Sotheby's said they are "among the most valuable sneakers to ever be offered on the market". Brahm Wachter, Sotheby?s Head of Streetwear & Modern Collectables, said: ?This pair is critical to the development of the Yeezy franchise, which has become one of the most important sneaker and lifestyle brands in history." The Kanye West & Mark Smith designed samples were built in Nike?s lab ? known as the ?Innovation Kitchen? ? at the company?s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon in 2007. The size 12 shoe is made of soft black leather with perforated detailing throughout the upper, and the heel overlay is branded with a tonal Swoosh. The design features the iconic Yeezy forefoot strap and signature ?Y? medallion lacelocks in bright pink. A custom lasered wooden box is included, which features a design and etching by the Yeezy 1 creator, Mark Smith. The sneakers / trainers are available to view at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from April 16 to April 21.
