29 August 2024, Saxony, Delitzsch: At the zoo in the northern Saxon city, the six-week-old Austrian-Hungarian white Baroque donkey foal "Aline" (r) and her mother, the donkey mare "Clara", are being pampered by zoo manager Brita Preisner in the outdoor enclosure. The donkey foal, which was nursed back to health after initial problems, and another donkey stallion born four days ago form the start of a breeding program for this highly endangered rare breed of domestic animal, of which there are only a few hundred left in Europe. The mother, four-year-old "Sissi", comes from the "Alfsee" ark in Lower Saxony, while three-year-old "Clara" comes from the Köthen zoo in Saxony-Anhalt. The father of the little foals is the donkey stallion "Richard" on loan from the zoo in Bayreuth, Bavaria, who has since moved on to Stralsund Zoo. White donkeys with their blue eyes were bred 400 years ago as luxury and ornamental animals for aristocratic society and were regarded as "bringers of light" and status symbols.
