18 November 2024, Brandenburg, Steinreich: A seasonal worker from the Heinz-Peter Frehn cucumber farm throws horseradish roots into a container. These roots were previously taken out of the ground using a special machine. The pungent horseradish roots have been harvested again in the Spreewald for a few weeks now. This year, the vegetable is being grown on around ten hectares. Traditionally, the roots are harvested from October to January, with the main harvest time being in November. Horseradish is an important and traditional crop in the Spreewald and, along with Spreewald gherkins, is one of only three protected geographical indications in the state of Brandenburg. However, there are only three farms still growing the root vegetable in the region. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa
